An increase in hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) among patients with textured hair, along with limited staff training, led a hospital to launch a focused haircare education initiative. The goal was to address knowledge gaps and improve outcomes through practical, patient-centered care.
An interdisciplinary team, including Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurses, Social Workers, and Educators, developed scalp assessment guidelines, selected appropriate haircare products, and created a multi-modal learning strategy. This included visual guides, online courses, and hands-on simulations.
To support implementation, 41 Haircare Champions from over 20 practice areas led training and provided ongoing peer support. The initiative resulted in a 0% HAPI rate to the scalp and head, improved staff confidence, and strengthened care practices.
This session will share the project’s development, outcomes, and practical tools that can be adapted across clinical environments to reduce preventable harm and enhance patient care.
