Nurse Talks Empowerment Series: Are Early Warning Systems Enough? Predicting the Warning
Length: 55 Minutes

Join us for a thought-provoking Nurse Talks  that discusses the capabilities and limitations of current patient monitoring systems in predicting healthcare concerns early. Traditionally, these systems analyze vital signs and extremes independently, resulting in a low positive predictive value of just 2-4 percent, meaning the majority of alarms are false positives. We contrast this with more advanced Early Warning Systems, which significantly improve detection with a positive predictive value of 22 percent. The segment will also discuss the latest advancements in patient monitoring technology, including the use of continuous streaming data, which can predict patient instability with an impressive 95 percent positive predictive value and provide a crucial 6-hour lead time over current methods. This discussion will provide nurses with insights into how leveraging these technological advancements can lead to faster and more accurate predictions, improving patient outcomes and operational efficiency in healthcare settings.
